Backgammon Dice Rolls and Related Strategies

The opening moves in backgammon are crucial moves. We have to think of the best backgammon opening strategies possible with the dice results we have. Here are sample strategies with certain dice rolls.

When the dice roll is 3-1 and our checker pieces are on 8 and 6 points, we may put the first piece on the 5-point and the second also on the 5-point. The pieces would both be on the 5-point and be a builder there to trap the opponent. Several more of this is a prime. When the point is within the 12 possible dice roll results it is likely to be landed on by the opponent.

When the dice roll is 4-2 and we have checkers on the 8-point and 6-point we may move both of them on the 4-point. This has the same effect as the 5-point above. It is within the 12 possible dice roll results and is likely to be landed on by enemy checkers. It is best to build primes or anchors. A rule here is don't let a single checker piece alone on a point for long. Always pair them.

Among effective backgammon opening strategies is when the dice roll says 6-1 and we have checker pieces on 13 and 8 points. We move the first on the 13-point to 7-point and the one on 8-point also on 7-point. This builds up our 7-point. If we have this setup on the 4, 5, 6, and 7 points then we have a major prime building up. We team this up with a 3-point builder and we have a major block.

For a 3-point builder we can make use of a 5-3 dice roll by using our checkers on the 8 point and 6-point, if we have them. We move the one on the 8-point to 3-point and the 6-point also on the 3-point. Then we have a super powerful major prime guarding that portion of the board. We can easily block or hit enemy checkers with it.

But we must remember to move them out of formation sometime soon. Keeping them there longer than necessary will mean defeat. The goal of the game is to finish the race first, not to establish powerful strongholds on the board forever. With this formation we can transfer them to our home board safely.
